The 5th-generation Echo Dot is the first one that doesn't feel like a compromise on sound. Amazon put a larger front-firing driver behind the fabric sphere, and the result is noticeably deeper bass and clearer vocals than any Dot before it — enough to carry a kitchen, bedroom or home office on its own. Alexa handles the rest hands-free: timers while your hands are covered in flour, weather before you leave, alarms you can silence with a tap on the top of the speaker. Voice control extends to your smart lights, plugs, cameras and thermostats, and the built-in temperature and motion sensors let you build routines that fire on their own — lights on when you walk in, fan on when the room gets warm.
There's more hardware inside than the size suggests. eero built-in means the Dot can extend a compatible mesh network's coverage instead of adding another dead zone. Pair two units for stereo, group them across rooms for whole-home audio, or attach one to a Fire TV as a rear channel. Privacy is handled with a dedicated microphone-off button that electronically disconnects the mics.
